Bend it like Beckham

Director: Gurinder Chadha

Analysis Work

1. Describe the representations found on the DVD/film poster (include an image of DVD/film poster) (this should be a detailed character textual analysis - A2 level)

the main colours in this poster are green, white and black and i think that they have used all of these colours because they all represent football in different ways. the green represents the football pitch which they play on, the black and white can have two meanings, the two together can be a football and the white could be the football posts of the white line drawings.

there are two main images in the background and one of these are the two main characters together in an image, which shows how they are close friends because they are hugging. the other image is of an indian family which you connect to one of the main characters in the front picture.

the messages in the poster are mainly visual as they all show what is on the screen but some of the images may also have background meanings when connected with the text.

i think that the intended audience for this poster is teenagers and just below who this may be able to relate to because of the way that their parents are and you can also see how it could be aimed at teenagers in general because some of the views that are put across stereotype teenagers as being people who will never listen to their parents even if they think they know best.

there is a USP which is one of the main characters who is Keira Knightley who has been in many very well known films before this so there will be a large audience who follow all of the films which she features in.

2. How does the film reflect changing attitudes to gender and ethnic identity in contemporary Britain?

3. What are the problems Jess faces as a British Asian 18-year-old girl?

4. How can filmmakers make a difference by representing the diversity national, regional, religious and ethnic identity in UK?

5. What does this film say about gender?

6. In what way are British teens represented in this film? (use specific examples from the text, consider the fact that it is a positive representation)

7. What are the themes and issues of this film? How are they represented/what is the film saying about them? (friendship, gnder, ethnicity/culture, family, growing up) >
